Monsgeek M1, which I wrote about last year, didn’t serve for long – about six months later, I replaced it with the wireless NuPhy Halo75 V2, wanting to cut the number of wires on my desk to a minimum. I took the switches out of the M1 – the excellent Kailh Jellyfish Clicky, put stronger springs in them and moved them to the NuPhy.

About the Halo75 V2, for now I’ll only say that it has served me well for a whole year without a single complaint. As for the Monsgeek M1, back then it went to the shelf partially vandalized, and only recently it was fully rebuilt.

A few years ago, I switched from a PC to a laptop. I didn’t spend much time choosing and just went with the simplest MSI GF63 model, equipped with the bare-minimum acceptable RTX 4050 graphics card and the corresponding i5-12450H processor.

I then made some upgrades: a 1TB Samsung 980 Pro, 64GB RAM (greatest possible for this motherboard), and a Honeywell PTM7950 thermal interface material. Right after that, it would have been an excellent workhorse, if not for one “but” – an extremely weak cooling system with a single cooler. Under heavy load, the 12450H would instantly heat up to 95°C and start throttling.

Long story short, I managed to solve this problem without putting the laptop in the fridge, attaching a water cooling system (yes, people actually do that), or even using Peltier elements – heaven forbid. On my unit, I dropped CPU temperature by ~25°C at idle and ~20°C under load without huge performance loss.

I built a keyboard on the 2-kilogram aluminum Monsgeek M1 base.

Another keyboard done. Base – Keychron v1. Switches – Kailh Box Autumn. Keycaps – Akko Clear Black. This time, there was more changes in the microcontroller firmware than usual.

I had a spare M.2 NVMe SSD with nowhere to install it — only SATA ports were available, and for some reason, NVMe-to-SATA converters simply don’t exist. However, there are adapters that convert such a drive into a USB flash device.
